On this episode of Humans of Chelmsford we meet a clown named Mr Popol – otherwise known as Paul Carpenter.
He is one half of the Popolinos, a comedy circus duo who have been performing across the country for 16 years.
With partner Kriss Freear, the mischievous Kakehole on stage, the pair serve as managers of Circus Wonderland, currently pitched up at Sun Corner in Billericay.
Each show, they transform into their clown characters to entertain and bring joy to their audiences. But who are the people behind the white faces?
Thanks to films like It, Coulrophobia, a fear of clowns, has become more common.
But the Popolinos offer a service called Clownselling, intended to help people overcome their fear as well as returning the public perception of clowns to its traditional comedic values.
Circus Wonderland is at Sun Corner in Billericay from September 20 until October 7.
